Prologue

In an attempt to keep in touch with friends and family during my year abroad in Japan, I am going to begin blogging. Surprisingly I have never felt the need to do so before, but actually it seemed like a great idea when I was faced with the thought of replying to email after email on a daily basis. Although the inevitable stress and struggle I will go through to teach my ridiculously technology illiterate Mum how to access the blog will no doubt send me mental (updates to follow), I think it will pay off for those of you who can actually turn your computer on. I think it will also be great for me to reflect on the ups and downs of my year abroad when I come back- like when you open a diary you wrote when you were young years and years later and think ‘bloody hell- I’d forgotten about that!’, but you remember it so well once your memory has been jogged. I like those sorts of things.
I’ll depart from London Heathrow on the 29th of September, but as I work my socks off in 2 jobs over the summer, the fact that I’ll be leaving home for a year to live and study in a foreign country seems to be drawing closer , much much quicker than I had thought it would. Its actually quite frightening. But until then I’ll post random updates on how my preparations are going before takeoff. I hope you enjoy reading my ramblings, whether they entertain you, put your mind at rest, or inspire you to come to japan and visit! I don’t know how, but they might.
